Honoring America's 250th, One Shingle at a Time
This year America turns 250. To mark it, our crew built the Stars and Stripes out of the same material we put over your head every day: roofing shingles. Then we took it further, blending nearly every color of asphalt shingle into one roof. Here is how it came together.
Why we did it
Two hundred and fifty years is a milestone most of us only get to see once. We wanted to mark it in the one language our shop speaks fluently: roofing. Instead of hanging a banner, we asked a simpler question. What if the flag itself were a roof? So we mapped out the stripes, the field of stars, and the exact shingle colors, then built it the way we build every job. Square, tight, and made to last.
The craftsmanship behind it
A flag looks simple until you try to make one out of shingles. Every stripe had to line up. Every star in the blue field had to sit in the right spot. Our crew hand-cut the shingles to keep the edges crisp and the proportions honest, then set each course by hand. Four of our guys built the whole thing, right here in Sugar Hill, GA, in less than a day. The same eye for detail we put into this flag is the eye we put into your roof: clean lines, tight seams, and work we are proud to sign our name to.
A roof no one has built before
The flag was only half of it. Across the rest of the roof we ran a diagonal blend of asphalt shingles in nearly every color the material comes in: charcoal, weathered wood, slate blue, terracotta, sand, and more, feathered into one continuous gradient. Asphalt shingles are made for one thing, keeping the weather out. Nobody treats them as a palette. We did. As far as we know, no one in America has built a roof like this out of standard asphalt shingles.
Watch the build come together, shingle by shingle.
Thank you, Sugar Hill
None of what we do works without the community around us. The homeowners who trust us with their roofs, the neighbors who wave when they see our trucks, the folks who have referred us to friends and family — this one is for you. Happy 250th birthday, America. It has been an honor to build here.
